Tess’ Steel Chromag Rootdown steel Hardtail

Why the Rootdown?

“I’ve wanted a Chromag hardtail for almost as long as I’ve been into mountain biking, and after finally getting the chance to actually test one out, I knew I just had to get my own!

I chose the Rootdown specifically because it shared many of the same fitment specs as my previous trail bike, allowing me to save some cash by simply purchasing a new frame and then swapping over the bulk of my parts, rather than investing in a complete new build.

I’m mainly looking forward to riding my Rootdown this summer on the local trails right here in Cumberland! I still have a lot of trails ot check off my list, but so far have really enjoyed ripping down Vanilla, Crafty Butcher, President’s Choice, and my favourite rock roll on Bonestorm! All the Cumberland classics: thank you, UROC (our local trail maintenance and management association). It’s also helped me improve my fitness and climbing efficiency overall.” – Tess

wheelset specs

For my wheels, I chose to start with NOBL TR35 Sinewave rims for their lighter overall weight, trail-focused dimensions (28-hole, 30mm internal width) and nice, compliant feel thanks to that Sinewave profile!

For hubs, I went with Project321’s G3 mountain hubs: Canadian-built hubs that offer a high 288 points of engagement, low drag, and aren’t obnoxiously loud. I also appreciate the 6-Lock rotor interface on these hubs, which has allowed me to use different rotors regardless of whether they were 6-bolt or Centerlock.

Lacing things together are Sapim’s CX-Ray spokes, a lighter, more compliant spoke upgrade option over the standard choice. To finish it all off, I’ve got Peaty’s Mk2 tubeless valves and a custom decal kit from Slik Graphics to match my purple and silver colour theme.

Personal Touches

Those who know me well will know that none of my mountain bikes are truly complete until they have some purple Chromag handlebars, and this bike is no exception! These are the Chromag FU40 in 780mm.

I’ve also added a special-edition Sea Otter top cap from Project321 to match my hubs, and a decal of a C-5 Galaxy airplane, as I’m a bit of an aviation nerd!
