E-bike wheels: component guide
Building the best e-bike wheels
The modern eMTB. Capable, powerful, and if we’re honest, somewhat heavyset most of the time. While building up a sub-1200g XC wheelset is certainly impressive, selecting the most robust and reliable components possible is paramount when building hoops for the high torque and load demands of an e-bike.
NOBL Ethos HD wheels are the top choice for eMTB platforms, particularly full-power e-bikes. These drive systems enable the fastest speeds, the most torque, and the potential for the greatest impact forces on your rims.
The Ethos HD rims are the strongest rims NOBL has ever made, exceeding 190J of force, perfectly designed for the demands of these high-power eMTB systems. Our Signature 38 and Sinewave TR41 wheelsets—both robust models optimized for aggressive, gravity-focused riding— are also excellent choices for eMTB platforms.
When it comes to hub, spoke, and freehub pairings for your custom NOBL e-MTB wheelset, the best options may not be so clear. Let’s break it down! From hub design and spoke selection to the benefits of steel drivers, this is your guide. For e-bike riders, the best-suited hubs need robust construction, high-quality materials, strong axles and flanges and a durable engagement mechanism that withstands torque without premature wear.
The top e-bike hub choices are Erase J-bend 60T hubs, DT Swiss 350’s, Chris King mountain hubs and Hope Pro 5 hubs with a 54-tooth steel e-bike freehub. Here’s what makes each highly compatible for e-bike riders:
Erase J-Bend
Erase Components J-Bend hubs are built using 7075-T6 aerospace-grade aluminum for the hub shells, axles, and end caps, delivering high strength while keeping weight low. They are paired with Grade 5 titanium freehub bodies to improve durability and resist sprocket wear without adding unnecessary mass. The 60-tooth ratchet drive system provides fast, reliable 6° engagement, using the full ratchet surface for strong power transfer and long-term durability—making these hubs especially well-suited to the higher torque demands of e-bikes.
DT350
The renowned reliability of DT350 hubs extends to e-bike use. They feature solid steel bearings and a simple, hearty design, while still being among the lightest in their class (440g per set). Their best feature is the 36t ratchet system, which gives rock-solid engagement. You can beef them up further with DT’s e-bike specific 24t steel ratchets for extra toughness, and these can be selected directly through the builders on NOBLwheels.com.
Chris King
The premium build quality and perfected tolerance of their steel bearings and RingDrive system makes Chris King hubs a prime choice for eMTBs. The stainless steel RingDrive system moves the engagement mechanism from the freehub to inside the hub shell, where it’s less vulnerable to wear and torque stress. With 72pts of engagement, your ride will feel responsive and secure.
HOPE PRO 5
Signature 38 wheels are powered by Hope Pro 5 hubs. Tried and tested, the Pro 5 offers an unbeatable performance to price ratio, with a strong track record of reliability and serviceability.
A new “zero drag” labyrinth seal and an improved ratchet-and-pawl system with updated springs greatly reduce friction and drag in the drive mechanism.
The hub shell has a profile designed to add stiffness without increasing weight and the axle design accommodates larger, sealed stainless steel cartridge bearings in a better arrangement to increase load capacity and longevity.
E-Bike Freehub: Featuring a steel freehub body and all six pawls engaging simultaneously to handle the higher torque loads associated with e-bikes. (54 points of engagement vs 108 with the alloy freehub)
Spokes
Alpina Extralite double-butted steel spokes are the optimal choice. Made from high-grade 302 stainless steel with 2.0mm – 1.7mm – 2.0mm dimensions, they offer standout strength-to-weight performance and excellent fatigue resistance.
For aggressive and heavier riders, Sapim CX-Ray bladed spokes will not provide the stiffness and stability these wheelsets demand. And while Berd spokes are rated for some e-bike use, based on our ride testing, we suggest sticking with robust steel options to ensure maximum durability and long-term reliability.
